Alphabet Soup // Typeface

Original ideas and inspirations for typeface (alphabet soup) brief.

I have been doing some experimenting with different styles and techniques in preparation for my typeface brief and also to spark inspiration for a final idea. I am working on creating a typeface which represents 'Samuel Hoh' and things that he likes, he hates, or that represent his personality. From my research I learnt that one of his greatest achievements is going on roller coasters and so I have used this as inspiration for my first typeface. We have a restricted colour theme of black and white, and so I have decided to keep my designs simple using this silhouette style approach. The typeface I have used is simple, and one of Sam's favourite styles, it is called 'Kai' and the serif style is very classic and easily legible.

Since experimenting with the word 'roller coasters', I have developed my idea's further looking at a range of visuals inspired by my original words from the questionnaire. I felt that I wasn't really inspired by these designs and I was trying to link the word closely with Sam's personality.

I then decided to completely start a fresh and use the word 'Dinosaur', although this doesn't directly link with Sam, and at first I was apprehensive towards this idea, after my critique session on Friday 7th October 2011, I decided that this was the best solution and after some positive directional feedback I established a new focal point and area's to expand and develop within my visuals.

I have tried to link my typeface with Sam's favourite font, 'Kai', this similar format also links the design to his personality and style. I experimented with detailed imagery, as well as more basic imagery looking at a simple outline with subtle detail as well as a solid black silhouette of the type.

After feedback on these styles I came to conclude that the simple outline with subtle detail would be most legible as the comprehensive visuals became too complicated for a small typeface and the solid block colour gave the impression of a car tyre rather than dinosaur bones.

I have a range of research and development sheets showing my inspirations and my process in creating a more focused and directed final design.
