10 facts about 'Fishermen' (initial research Brief 5)
Over our lunch hour on Monday we had to collect 10 facts about our occupation to get to know some basic history background and information about the profession. Here are my 10 facts about 'Fishermen':
- worldwide there are 38 million commercial and subsistent fishermen
- 'Fishermen' as a term is applied to both the occupation and recreational fishermen
- Fishermen have existed since the mesolithic period
- Fishermen were the main provider of food for the Ancient Egyptians
- 74% of fishermen work in capture fisheries and 26% in aquaculture
- The total fishery production or 133 million tonnes equated to an average productivity of 3.5
tonnes per person
- 80% of the worlds fishermen are from Asian countries
- There are 8 different types of fishermen
- Fishermen and fishing have affected ancient egyptian religion; mullets were worshipped as
a sign of the arriving flood season
- A fisherman is somebody who captures fish and other animals from a body of water
